Mnemba island snorkeling off the northeast coast of Zanzibar, Mnemba Island is an isolated paradise where dolphins come to play and the waters are teeming with marine life. A renowned diving site, it also houses a luxury resort operated by the travel company andBeyond called Mnemba Island Lodge.
The reefs surrounding the island are a sight to behold. A riot of color, they are an artist’s palette — a collage of coral hues that shimmer a meter below the surface.
Snorkeling is the best way to explore these beautiful coral reefs and teeming sea life. You will be able to see Moorish idols, snappers, clownfish in their anemones, and many other species. Keep an eye out for the masters of disguising, Frog Fish who camouflage themselves so that they are not seen by predators. On the sea bed, look out for blue starfish, Red-knobbed starfish, or the fearsome crown-of-thorns starfish (a dangerous coral-eating species). Green turtles can occasionally be seen here as well.
The Best Time to Visit Mnemba Island for Snorkeling Adventures
The underwater world of Mnemba Island is truly breathtaking, but remember to respect the delicate ecosystem and observe from a distance. Also, make sure you bring a waterproof camera to capture the stunning sights!
There are several tour companies that will offer snorkeling trips to mnemba. Prices for these tours start at about $30-40 from Matemwe or Nungwi, and slightly more from a resort. It is recommended to contact a local tour company rather than arranging through your hotel as they may be able to bargain for you a better price.
