Unlike some other football rivalries, the Pacific Clasico isn’t rooted in a specific incident or overshadowed by a certain player. Instead, it has a much more illustrious history, spanning over nearly a century and connecting two countries with vastly different political views. The rivalry is fueled by the ferocity of the game, but it also comes from the rivalry’s deep-rooted political and cultural roots.

The game is played annually, and has been since 1978, with the exception of a two-year hiatus in 1954 (series record: 107-31). The rivalry stems from the fact that Menominee and Marinette are “twin towns,” separated by less than a mile of water and a bridge. The teams also share a rich history, ranging from the formation of the ‘Coal Bucket’ game to their rivalry in other sports, such as basketball and baseball.

The rivalry has even made its way into reggae music. At the 1989 staging of Sunsplash, the premier reggae festival in Jamaica, it took Inner City, a dubplate sound, allegedly eight hours to beat out Electro Force, a rub-a-dub sound, for the crown in front of tens of thousands of spectators.
