Omaha is a city of contrasts. It is famous for its beef (and the steakhouses that serve it), but is also a center of research and development for biotechnology and other high-tech industries.

What are the two basic types of warehouses?

The area’s early success as a transportation hub brought Nebraska warehouse to the downtown district. Warehouses stocked food, paper goods and hardware from manufacturers, and sold them to small businesses through traveling salesmen. In the 1870s, the city grew to be a wholesale jobbing center for the nation, purchasing goods from factories and transporting them by railroads to towns along the Great Platte River Road and elsewhere in the United States.

In recent years, the city has become known as “the Silicon Prairie” for its growing information technology and telecommunications industry. Many large companies have moved to the area, bringing jobs and revenue. The downtown district is home to CenturyLink Center Omaha and TD Ameritrade Park, as well as several main street retail districts.

While the local residents are very proud of their city’s history and heritage, they are also looking to the future. Omaha is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, and a number of new developments are underway. These include the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge, which crosses the Missouri River at the Nebraska/Iowa state line. It is also the site of a new headquarters for Gavilon, a commodities trading company that provides origination, storage and handling, transportation and logistics, and marketing and distribution services in agriculture, fertilizer and energy markets.
